Punu Mask 2
Punu, Gabon. Wood. Pigments.
Stylized, classic looking mask with a surrealistic expression. It seems as if the mask was purposefully understated to give it a most magisterial appearance. It is carved on a base which seems to thrust the face forward as if to compel further eye contact with its audience.
Was supposedly used for tutelary and ancestral ceremonies.
