Fang Mask 2
Fang, Gabon. Wood. Pigments.
Height: 29"
Fine, regal looking Fang mask. The elongation and simplification of the human face, complete with the ethnographic sign/ symbols and scarification, make this mask a marvel to look at. The carver used the dual coloration of dark brown and white pigments to highlight and detail areas of the facial plane, forcing one to also take notice of the small slit eyes and mouth. And although the mouth appears as just a slit, upon closer observation it seems to be open.
Used for royal cult, social control and communal protection.
