Dan Mask
Dan, Cote D'voire. Wood. Pigments.
Height: 12"
A Gunyeya or race mask.
In the olden days, a mask such as this would be used to teach young men to fight. The mask's wearer was pursued by another young man who was not wearing a mask. If caught, the winner then wore the mask and was himself pursued, and so on. At the end of the race, the winner was recognized as such and gained social status.
The large round eyes was said to facilitate the vision of the masked man during the race. The mask showcases crust like pigments.
