Bete Mask
Bete, Cote D'Voire. Wood. Pigment.
Height: 13"
Exaggerated (and perhaps, frightening to some) features characterize the mask. Exaggerations include a high - domed fore head, protruding mouth, wide nostrils that stretch from one side of the face to the other, and small circular eyes.
Characterized as a war mask, it was used to prepare men for war activities and victorious celebrations afterwards. Perhaps the mask's look characterized the gravity of the occasion. The people's survival may have depended upon their being victorious.
