Mossi, Burkina Faso, Wood. Pigments. Height: 14"
A n anthropomorphic mask. The peoples of Burkina Faso, Cote D'Voire, Guinea and Mali, are known to humanize animal images in their spiritual practices and/or celebrations. This mask seems weathered and has scarifications. The deep set eyes remind one of an animal in quiet observation of its prey or perhaps one observing a perceived aggressor.
Used for agricultural rites.
