Ashione Gallery

*Ah-hh Ashione, ebe ndioma mara, nazu!

We Speak African Art!

Baule, Cote D'Voire. Wood, Pigments.

Height: 18"

A stylized discoid mask of wondrous abstraction, with oval framed eyes and two horns - even the horns haves eyes! This extra pair of eyes would have been of great interest to old Africans, as it would have signified additional clairvoyance on the part of the deity.

Incorporating the zig-zagging pattern of neighboring Yaure people, this mask compels many conversational stories.

It was said to have been used for commemorative, agricultural and funeral rites.
