Primordial ancestor in a zoomorphic form. The Bambara could trace their ancestry to this animal form and therefor to their first god. The mask was assigned many duties, such as, protection ceremonies, issues related to ancestor cults, initiation rites and ceremonies, and cyclical agricultural rites.
